Over time the concrete flooring of your patio will become dingy and lack luster as a layer of dirt, pollen, algae, and other contaminants build up.
Here are some simple steps on how to clean your patio concrete:
- Move plants, furniture, and other items off of your concrete and sweep the surface thoroughly to remove any dirt from the surface. You may also want to pull up any weeds from around the edges of your concrete at this time.
- In a simple disposable spray bottle mix a 3/4 water and 1/4 bleach solution, and add a teaspoon of liquid dishwasher soap to the mixture.
- Spray the solution over your patio surface, waiting a few minutes for the solution to soak in and work its magic, then scrub the flooring with a stiff nylon bristle brush (using a wire brush can leave metal pieces that can rust and stain your concrete).
- Remove tough stains by creating a peanut butter like consistency paste using a cleaner like Oxi-clean. Apply the paste the troublesome area and wait an hour before scrubbing the area clean.
- Rinse the flooring off with a water hose.
Looking for a more eco-friendly way to clean your patio concrete? Try this!
Option 1: Use a vinegar and water mixture (½ and ½) or a straight vinegar wash for more heavily stained concrete. It smells, but it works!
Option 2: Add ½ cup of baking soda to a gallon of distilled water, the add ⅛ of a cup of liquid dishwashing liquid to the solution. Fill a spray bottle with the solution and spray the surface of the concrete, wait about 30 minutes before you start scrubbing.
Maybe you want something with some power
For more heavily stained patio concrete you may need to pressure wash it, you can choose to rent a pressure washing machine and do it yourself or hire a professional service.
Here are a couple of the pros and cons of choosing either method:
Doing it Yourself Pros
- Renting a pressure washer is relatively inexpensive
- You can decide when to do it according to your schedule
Doing it Yourself Cons
- Without proper training on pressure washer use, you risk damaging your concrete and it is a time consuming tedious task.
- Without scheduling an appointment it’s easy to put off and never actually get the job done (sound familiar?)
Hiring a Professional Pressure Washer Pros
- With experience and training, not to mention insurance coverage, damaging your property is not as much of a risk
- You don’t have to have the added step of renting and returning the machine on time or having the added expense of cleaning chemicals
- Hiring a pressure washing service costs more than renting and DIY
- Scheduling an appointment time that works for both parties
Regardless of which method that you use, it is necessary to clean your patio periodically. Use these techniques to keep your outdoor living areas looking their best.

You may be looking for ways to improve your health this year. One of the ways you can do this is by simply spending more time outdoors. Here are five health benefits of spending time outside:
Increase Vitamin D Intake
Your body must have vitamin D to absorb calcium and promote bone growth, according to Daniel J DeNoon. If your body doesn’t get enough vitamin D, your bones can become soft and fragile.
Your body can produce vitamin D naturally with exposure to direct sunlight. Most people can get enough vitamin D with only 15 minutes of direct sun exposure two times per week.
Improved Eye Health
Staring continuously at backlight screens (phones, computers, televisions) for a prolonged period can lead to Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). You may experience blurred or double vision, red or irritated eyes. Research shows that between 50% and 90% of people who work at a computer screen have at least some symptoms.
Working adults aren’t the only ones affected. Kids who stare at tablets or use computers during the day at school can have issues too, especially if the lighting and their posture are less than ideal.
Going outdoors and taking a break from the screens to focus on objects that are distant can help you prevent CVS and possibly reverse the symptoms.
Spending too much time indoors and away from natural lights can alter your natural sleep cycle, called circadian rhythms. However, spending time outdoors can reset your circadian rhythms which may lead to improved sleep.
Breathe Fresh Air
Indoor air pollution can be up to ten times worse than outdoor air pollutants. Inadequate ventilation, mold, and other chemicals can lower indoor air quality.
Spending time outdoors breathing fresh air can improve your health.
Increased Psychological Health
You can improve your mental health by spending more time outdoors. Studies have shown that being outdoors reduces stress, boost serotonin and dopamine.
Being outdoors may improve your mood and make you happier!

A porch swing isn’t just a piece of outdoor furniture; it’s a state of mind. Hop on and swing for a while and you are instantly taken away to a stress-free zone.
Installing a porch swing under a porch or patio cover is fast and straightforward, but you will need to have a patio cover with solid ceiling joist to hold the weight of the swing and people. It is never safe to hang a swing from joints or masonry.
Step 1: Select a spot for your swing
Choose a location with adequate space from walls, windows, and rails to allow the swing to move. You should allow at least 2 1/2 feet behind the swing. Once you find the perfect location for the porch swing, locate a cross beam or ceiling joist to install the swing.
Step 2: Identify the location for the bolt holes
Measure the width of the porch swing. Add to 2 to 4 inches in width as you mark the location for the eye bolts on the cross beam or ceiling joist. Placing the eye bolts wider than the width of the swing helps prevent swaying or twisting of the swing.
Step 3: Drill the holes
Next drill pilot holes in the cross beam or ceiling joist slightly smaller than the shaft of the eye bolts you are using. Screw in the eye bolts into the cross beam or ceiling joints, use a screwdriver through the eye for the final tightening.
Step 4: Suspend the swing
Suspend the porch swing from the eye bolts. Adjust the length of the chain or rope so that the swing is even on both sides. The swing should be at a comfortable level to sit.
Step 5: Enjoy!
